Giving Tuesday, often stylized as #GivingTuesday, was created in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y in New York City in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. It was launched as a response to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, encouraging people worldwide to focus on giving back during the holiday season. Held annually on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday has grown into a global movement, inspiring millions of people across more than 75 countries to donate, volunteer, and support charitable causes. Its simple mission—to inspire generosity—has sparked countless acts of kindness and helped strengthen communities everywhere.
